It’s probably not news that you should clean your bedding frequently, as they accumulate dead skin cells, sweat, dust mites, dust, pollen, and other potentially allergenic and unhygienic impurities. While your bed sheets and duvet covers get the regular cleaning by being replaced and washed weekly, you should also take care of your doonas, blankets, pillows, and toppers once every few months.
To keep them in top shape and prevent further problems like mould, mildew, staining, or improper cleaning, it’s best to get them to a professional cleaning service. While some items are labelled as machine washable, some of them can be damaged if put in a washing machine or even if they are cleaned with a steamer, so make sure your label doesn’t say “dry clean only” before you try one of those things.
How Often Should You Clean Your Doonas?
Doonas make you sleep comfortably by regulating your temperature at night and also provide comforting weight on you, which is proven to make your sleep better. As it does this, it also absorbs sweat and body oils and gets contaminated with dust and other particles, even when it’s protected by a doona cover and you’re washing sheets regularly.
Some doonas, especially those made of synthetic fibers, can be cleaned in regular washing machines using warm water rather than hot water, but the trouble is getting them dry quickly. Because it can retain moisture, a doona should be dried as quickly as possible to prevent mould and mildew from forming.
As long as the label on your doona instructs you to use dry cleaning only, don’t try to do it yourself, as you can damage the doona and get yourself a potential health hazard.
This being said, doonas should be properly cleaned every 6 months.
How Often Should You Clean Your Comforter?
Comforters, just like doonas, are bulky and can be very hard to clean at home. If you don’t have a very large washing machine, don’t even try cleaning it like that. It’s not a good idea, as you can damage both the comforter and the washing machine.
The same common-sense practices are recommended for cleaning bed comforters: read the care labels carefully, follow the instructions and wash your comforter 2-3 times a year or immediately after being used by someone who is sick, to prevent future contagion.
How Often Should You Clean Your Pillows?
Following the same instructions as above, and making sure you can get your pillows dried fast, you should get them cleaned every four to six months. This way, you can have a healthy sleep and prolong the life of your pillows.
